20 years ago a debate erupted about whether there have been certain ‘Asian values’. Many attention dedicated to dubious claims by autocrats that democracy wasn’t one of them. But a far more interesting, if less noticed, argument had been that conventional family members values had been stronger in Asia compared to America and European countries, and therefore this partly taken into account Asia’s financial success.
Into the terms of Lee Kuan Yew, previous prime minister of Singapore and an enthusiastic advocate of Asian values, the Chinese household encouraged “scholarship and time and effort and thrift and deferment of current enjoyment for future gain”.
